The 1st weekend in August, I made a quick trip
over to Jamaica to visit my friend Suzanne.
We went from the airport right to a site visit for a project she
oversees in the inter-city area of Kingston.
The project is a pottery studio located in a neighborhood called
Rosetown, not too far from Trenchtown (where Bob Marley is from).
On Saturday, we got up early to watch the semi-finals of the
men’s 100m sprints and then headed over to the South Coast of the Island to a
place called Treasure Bay. Saturday was gorgeous
and once we got to Treasure Beach we watched the Jamaicans take gold in the
100m women’s final and then headed out to the Pelican Bar, more or less a
make-shift shack/bar in the middle of the ocean.
Sunday we had to cut our beach trip short and head back to
Kingston since Tropical Storm Ernesto
was threatening to bring heavy rains and winds to the South Coast, but
we did make it back to Kingston in time to watch the men’s 100M final and to
hear the city erupt in celebration with car horns, air horns, and the banging
of pots and pans. Though Ernest didn’t
turn out to be much of a storm, it was still rainy and cloudy all day Monday,
Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence. Since there wasn’t much to be done outside,
we went to Usain Bolt’s restaurant to watch more track and field and happened
to catch the men’s 100M medal ceremony.
We finished off Independence Day by heading outside of
Kingston along the water to get fresh fish and watch the National Independence
Day Gala waterside with views back over the “skyline” of Kingston.
